The Minister of the Department of Trade and Industry recently published a notice in the Government Gazette no 33581 deferring the general effective date of the Consumer Protection Act until the 31 March 2011 to ensure efficient and effective implementation of the act. The provision for hefty penalties has been made for non-compliance. The government has earmarked over R50 million to fund the implementation of the Act and penalties for non-compliance can be up to 10% of a business turnover up to a maximum of R10 million.
